Do you find song singing different than opera?

I use the same singing and rehearsal techniques for operatic and song repertoire. The music dictates the individual vocal and dramatic requirements.

Do you have a CD that I can purchase?

Yes! Go to the the store page of this site for purchasing information on my Marcus DeLoach: American Song CD. Also, look for my recording of Elie Siegmeister’s opera The Lady of the Lake with Gerard Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony on the NAXOS label. Coming soon too, on NAXOS is Scott Wheeler's fantastic opera The Construction of Boston.

I’ve heard you sing popular and Broadway songs in concert. Do you plan to perform in a musical in the future?

Yes, I am very excited to be working with my new commercial agent to continue crossing over into theater and Broadway. Music is music and I enjoy performing every type of it from rock with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to Mozart at Lincoln Center.

Are either of your parents singers?

Although I’m the only musician in my family, I do have some singing ancestors.

My great grandfather on my father’s side of the family was an Italian immigrant and labor leader in the Lawrence, Massachusetts mills. In the 1950’s, Richard Kelly devoted a chapter to him called “Citizen Tortolano” in his book Nine Lives for Labor. Kelly tells how my great grandfather was an opera enthusiast with a “wonderfully warm and robust bass voice” who would sing such repertoire as Verdi’s Il Trovatore at the Italian-American Club in downtown Lawrence.

My great grandmother on my mother’s side of the family was also an amateur singer and regularly performed at events in her home town of Carlisle, Massachusetts.

What is your dream operatic role?

There are many roles that I'd like to perform. I'm especially interested in singing new works and repertoire in English (classical and Broadway). My current "dream roles" (not in any specific order) are Pelleas, Owen Wingrave, Dr. Malatesta, Don Giovanni, basically anything Broadway (in the Robert Weede/John Raitt tradition), the “seven-fold” role in Death in Venice, and Nathan in Nicholas Maw’s opera Sophie's Choice.

People say that you are a great interpreter of songs in English. Why do you think you have an affinity for that repertoire?

This is a funny question. I don’t think anyone would ever ask Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau why he's so fond of the German Lied or why Gerard Souzay has a sympathy for the French mélodie. Yet in America, people find it strange (even bourgeois!) when you are comfortable singing songs in your own language. I think that classically trained singers often underestimate the importance of singing in English. The American repertoire of song is quite substantial, and if you want to know where the current “hot bed” of song composition in the world is, you need only look in our own back yard. I’m proud to take an active role in performing and promoting this wonderful repertoire.

Who were your voice teachers?

I've had the privilege to study with three of the best teachers in the United States. I began my formal vocal training with Edward Zambara and later worked with Ruth Falcon. Both of them were great singers themselves who hailed from amazing vocal lineages. Zambara studied with the teacher of Eleanor Steber, William Whitney, whose father studied with the great baritone David Bispham. Ruth Falcon studied with many great singers such as Zinka Milanov, George London, Regine Crespin and Marinka Gurewich. I currently work with Fred Carama!

Where do you teach? Do you present master-classes?

I teach voice and classes as an adjunct pofessor at Ramapo College of New Jersey and additionally teach and coach privately in NYC to both classical and Broadway singers. For those interested in lessons, master-classes, or concert packages please send your inquiries to info@marcusdeloach.com.
